Mushroom Coffee vs. Regular Coffee: What's Actually Different
Mushroom coffee is still coffee. Brands blend powdered mushroom extract into ground or instant coffee rather than replacing it, so the base drink is the same category, just with an added ingredient and, usually, a different caffeine amount per serving.
What changes
Three things differ from a regular bag of coffee, per the two brands compared on this site. Caffeine: Four Sigmatic's Focus blend runs about 150 mg per 12 oz cup, close to a regular cup, while Ryze runs about 48 mg per serving, roughly a third of that (see Does Mushroom Coffee Have Caffeine?for the full breakdown). Ingredients: Four Sigmatic adds 250 mg each of Lion's Mane and Chaga extract per serving, stated as fruiting-body-only on its label; Ryze adds a 2 g six-species blend without a per-species breakdown. Extraction method: Four Sigmatic states "no fillers, grains or carriers"; Ryze's label doesn't specify fruiting body versus mycelium for its six species.
What doesn't change
Both products are still brewed or mixed like regular coffee, and neither brand publishes an independent taste-test or nutrition comparison against a standard cup. Four Sigmatic describes its own Focus blend as having "rich notes of dark chocolate" on its product page; that's the brand's own flavor description, not a third-party rating.
