Do Mushroom Supplements Really Work?

There's no single yes-or-no answer, because "mushroom supplements" covers five different species studied for five different effects, at very different levels of evidence. The more useful question is how to check a specific claim yourself, starting with the label.

What the label can tell you

Two things separate a checkable claim from a vague one: extraction method and dose. Fruiting body (the visible, harvested mushroom) and mycelium (the root-like network, often grown on grain and harvested with that grain substrate attached) are not the same thing nutritionally. Per Nammex's published lab testing, fruiting-body extracts run over 30% beta-glucans, a compound class used as a potency marker, with under 3% starch. Mycelium-on-grain products can carry 35-40% residual grain starch and as little as 1-5% beta-glucans. A label that doesn't specify which one you're getting is missing a real, checkable difference.

Dose matters just as much. Real Mushrooms discloses a lab-verified beta-glucan percentage for its Lion's Mane capsules and states the extraction is fruiting-body only. Host Defense states its Lion's Mane is grown on fermented rice biomass and doesn't publish a beta-glucan percentage. Neither difference makes one automatically "better," but it means the two products aren't directly comparable without reading past the front label.
