Are Mushrooms Dangerous? What to Worry About
Most mushrooms people encounter, culinary species from a grocery store, functional mushroom supplements, mushroom coffee, aren't dangerous. The real, documented risk clusters in two specific places: foraging misidentification, and sustained high-dose use of one particular species, Chaga.
Foraging: a small number of well-documented lookalikes
Foraging accidents cluster around a handful of specific lookalike pairs rather than random bad luck. Destroying angel is mistaken for edible meadow mushrooms; deadly Galerina is mistaken for honey mushroom; false morel is mistaken for true morel. Each pair has a specific, checkable trait that separates them, not a general appearance comparison, color and smell don't reliably work. The danger is compounded by timing: amatoxin symptoms from destroying angel can take 5 to 12 hours to appear, and gyromitrin symptoms from false morel typically appear 6 to 12 hours after eating, per the sources below, both well after the meal is finished and any chance to reconsider has passed.
Chaga: real risk, but at sustained high doses
Chaga is the one functional mushroom on this site with documented human harm on record. Two published case reports describe kidney injury tied to heavy, sustained Chaga powder use, one patient developed end-stage renal disease after long-term daily use, another developed acute kidney injury after 10-15 g/day for 3 months.
